Tool technologies were vitally important to Inuit. Most tools were designed uniquely to take advantage of the materials that were naturally available. Many designs have not been improved on or changed although new materials have been substituted as they became available.
This scrapper or qisukaut is made out of the tip of a bull caribou antler. It is designed for scrapping up moss for fuel. If you tried to pick moss in the winter you would quickly wear out your mitts. It could also be used as a weapon in the event of an animal attack or serve as a brake for a dog sled.
