Evidence
Peat moss was used for mud runners. The soil must be free of sand and small pebbles. Also any root material was removed. Peat moss was usually gathered by digging down below root level and cutting out chunks of moss.

Perspective
The mud had to be applied without mitts. It was very cold on the hands, especially the baby fingers which liked to freeze first.

Significance
The runners of the sled enabled it to run smoothly across various kinds of terrain and snow. This helped when carrying heavy loads and increased speeds. Applying the runners was an important process.
